Better Know A Blogger: Ria Michelle

By Nilina Mason-Campbell

A Miami resident for the past three years, Ria Michelle has quickly become the “It” girl of the city’s style blogging scene. Through her eponymous blog, she showcases her approachable style and colorful wardrobe in regular photo updates shot by a host of photographers. She also runs her own online store, Filthy Magic, in edition to lending her styling talents to photoshoots. She’s a girl about town, appearing at a host of events like U.S. Open Polo Championship, parties at The Standard and recently an event marking 30 years of the brand Guess. The 25 year-old reckons her favorite thing about Miami “is that there’s always something going on so I can always find some trouble to get into.”

Here we talk to the ambitious blogger about her edginess, opportunities that have arisen from the blog such as netting the role of brand representative for Kanon Organic Vodka and recently a gig as host to a Swarovski event alongside Gossip Girl costume designer Eric Daman, plus get the low-down on the origins of her blog.

How would you describe your style?
Ria Michelle: I’m interchangeable, my style changes with my mood so I don’t like to use labels. I used to be “goth” in high school so I guess a bit of that “edginess” seeps into everything I wear.

What led to you starting your blog?
I used to have a personal blog ages ago. I quit [in order] to turn the domain from to [into] a modeling portfolio. While making the switch from modeling to styling I found blogging again and realized my interest in fashion would re-spark my interest in blogging.

What influences your style?
Fashion mags like RUSSH, model off duty style, my friends, and other bloggers.

You seem to shop online often. What are the benefits of doing just that and what have been some of your favorite finds?
Shopping online just yields better deals/sales and introduces you to a larger world of fashion. For example so many amazing Australian designers can be found online but not in any mall. Also I love that the chance of you running into someone in the same thing as you are greatly lessened as opposed to mall shopping.

How would you describe Miami fashion?
There are so many different types of people in Miami, it’s a definite mix but it’s always going to be colorful and relaxed.

What have been your favorite opportunities to come your way through the blog?
Definitely connecting with Kanon Organic Vodka, working with Eric Daman the costume designer for Gossip Girl and Swarovski. I got to meet an amazingly influential person in the world of fashion, overcome my fear of public speaking and connect with a really cool brand all live on camera haha. Going to NYFW will always be a favorite and I don’t see it ever getting old. I’ve got a few exciting things coming up as well that are definitely gonna become faves.

What are your ambitions outside of the blog?
Outside of my blog…what is that?! Haha, I feel like everything is sorta connected to the blog or can be, but I want to travel more. Especially outside of the U.S. I want to eventually open a brick and mortar store for Filthy Magic.

What do you do when you’re not blogging?
When I’m not blogging, I’m working on the webstore and hanging out with my friends. We love to brunch; unlimited mimosas and we are there. I’m sort of a TV junkie so I watch a lot of British, Korean and Japanese TV in addition to my slew of American shows. I game a bit, but not as much as I used to because of the blog and stuff. Right now I’m into Star Wars the Old Republic.
